Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma scuba community are joining forces to help the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup will be held at Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. The cleanup removed 810 pounds worth of trash from the waters last year. This effort is ongoing to preserve marine life and the environment. Getting involved is a great way to promote your business and meet other people who enjoy scuba.

Organisers have planned to have kayakers and scuba diver teams work together to take away fishing gear from Tacoma's waterfront. Once the net has been removed from the water, divers will lift it out of there using a boat elevator. Wounded Warriors will also be available to help with large amounts of trash and other waste. The organizers believe the cleanup will protect our waters and offer a unique experience.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can save endangered rockfish species by taking part in a Tacoma SCUBA rockfish survey. This dive is part of the Harbor WildWatch citizen science collaboration with the NOAA. Survey participation is open to all divers. The dive brief is where the training takes place. However, the participant should be certified to participate in night dives.

WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. The study includes a tag-recovery monitoring system for sport fishing that allows five annual releases of black rocksfish. These fish were released on pinnacles in the area fished by the Westport charter fishing fleet. The survey involves the placement of two coded wire tags within the opercular musculature of these fish to determine individual identification after recapture.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

Commencement Bay is a good place to go diving in the greater Tacoma Area. This Earth Day, 47 pounds of trash was collected by volunteers from the water by scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing net, and glass bottles made up the majority of the garbage. Marine Science and Technology Center MaST, part Highline Community College, organized this clean-up. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

Tacoma's dive group witnessed an amazing sight while scubadiving. A bull sea-lion had been shot with an arrow by scuba divers. According to reports, the injured animal was blind from shark bites and had a scar from an arrow. Bjorn was rescued and taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles. Bjorn, the sea lion's name is after a character on "Vikings", is now his new name. This mighty creature is almost 400 pounds in weight and is currently residing at Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. The group was astonished to see a sea lion in action for the first time. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. Sea lion puppies tend to be in groups of the same age as their parents and will play with divers in shallow water. The pups enjoy playing with divers and jumping in the water to provide toys for them.
