The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Each part is attached to a buoyancy compensater that creates neutral buoyancy underwater, and positive buoyancy above the surface. Backplate and wing are modular systems, with each component separable from the other. These are great options for divers who aren't certain which type they should get. These are the pros & cons of each.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel back plate and wings are available with or without a harness. Backplate and wings made from 316 stainless-steel are highly resistant to saltwater. It is cut by a CNC router and polished manually to prevent any sharp edges from causing premature wear. These can be used with either a single or dual-airtank system. The stainless steel backplate and wings can be detached for easier storage.

Backplates made from stainless steel are much heavier than those made of aluminium. Stainless steel backplates can be used in colder areas to reduce weight. Stainless Steel backplates are much easier to fit than lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer is able to provide weighting advice and help you decide what weight suits your body. You don't have as many to replace the backplate.
Plastic
Although the plastic back plate/wing buoyancy is not ideal, it can still be useful for replacing weight on the weight belt. Jacket BCDs have pockets and weight integration. The wing and backplate do not have these ancillary functions. These components can be purchased separately. This article will discuss the pros and cons of both. It is important to choose the right back plate for you.
Softpack harness
There are many types of harnesses available for wings and back plates. The most popular are wing BCDs (backplates) and wing plates. These include the necessary components such as the backplate, wing and harness. They allow for customization of the harness with many adjustable features. Softpack BCDs are perfect for technical divers as they are made from lightweight, flexible materials and are not attached with a rigid plate.

The drawback to steel backplates harnesses is their inability for adaptability. The harness cannot be used with single tanks. It's only designed for use with double tanks that have permanent bands. The steel harness is the most rigid option but is clumsy to use when traveling. This steel harness can only be used with double tanks. The steel backplate is also not recommended for use on the land. It can be converted to work with single tanks by attaching adapters, but this is not recommended.
